Foreign collaborations - Sept. 25, 2026
Starting with application due dates on or after September 25, 2026, if you are proposing foreign collaborations to a participating specialized notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) you can use the application forms and structure of the PF5 parent, but follow the due dates, opportunity requirements, review criteria, and other aspects of the participating specialized NOFO.

NIH data sharing and DMS plan - Oct. 1, 2026
Effective October 1, 2026, recipients must use the RPPR (Section C.5.c) to report progress on data sharing activities or report changes to an approved Data Management Sharing (DMS) plan.
Prior approval will no longer be required to modify an approved DMS plan and will be deactivated in the eRA Commons Prior Approval Module. For those awards subject to DMS requirements, beginning FY 2027, NIH will require the updated DMS Plan format.

NCI applications with animal models - Oct. 5, 2026
Starting with the October 5, 2026, deadlines, all NCI grant applications that involve animal models must include a brief and explicit justification for the use of animal models and clarification on why alternatives are inadequate. This justification should be included directly in the application’s Abstract section.

NIH change to letters of support - FY2027
With the implementation of Forms J in Fiscal Year 2027, date TBD, NIH will replace Letters of Support with Letters of Collaboration.
The Letters of Collaboration will follow the format currently used by NSF. For further information, see Notice NOT-OD-26-094
