Welcome
It is an honor for me to welcome you to Emory’s Public Health and General Preventive Medicine Residency and Fellowship Program (PHGPM). For over 25 years, we have recruited and trained physicians to become outstanding clinicians and public health leaders. Our location in Atlanta, the “public health capital of the world,” provides unparalleled opportunities for training in and exposure to public health opportunities.
Our program blends frontline public health experiences, MPH coursework, clinical training, mentorship, and scholarship to prepare trainees from diverse clinical backgrounds to pursue careers in clinical medicine, research, and public health at the county, state, and federal levels. Our rotation sites include the Atlanta Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center, Emory Healthcare (Emory Clinic, Emory University Hospital, Emory University Hospital Midtown, Emory Student Health Services), DeKalb Public Health, the Georgia Department of Health, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, among others. Trainees are also encouraged to apply for rotations at the United States Preventive Services Task Force/Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.
What makes a successful Emory PHGPM trainee? The residents and fellows who are most successful in this program are passionate about public health, take initiative, and are independent, self-motivated, and engaged. Unlike many clinical residencies, PHGPM trainees are expected to participate in and/or lead scholarly projects on most rotations. Balancing these projects, which may extend past the end of the rotation, with clinical responsibilities and MPH coursework requires skills more aligned with those of a junior faculty member than a clinical resident. The most successful trainees are able to maximize the impact of each rotation on their learning and leverage their experiences and scholarly projects into abstracts, oral presentations, and manuscripts.
Since joining the Emory PHGPM leadership in 2020, first as Associate Program Director and now as Program Director, I have immensely enjoyed working with every single trainee to help them achieve their career goals. Our alumni have gone on to additional training in CDC’s Epidemic Intelligence Service and clinical fellowships; clinical and academic positions; and frontline public health positions in Georgia and beyond. Please explore our website for more information and thank you for your interest in our program!
