New Worker Training Program for First Responders to Be Offered by National Institute of Environmental Health Services

Ebola Biosafety and Infectious Disease Response Training will be offered to 35,000 first responders and workers in waste management, transportation, and other professions with potential infectious disease exposure. The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, part of the National Institutes of Health, will provide training grants to Duke University, Emory University, and other educational and labor organizations to strengthen the national safety net for meeting infectious disease threats.
Dr Alex Isakov Leads Emory University Ebola Biosafety and Infectious Disease Response Program

Alexander Isakov, MD, MPH, director of the Emory Section of Prehospital and Disaster Medicine, and Executive Director of Emory's Office of Critical Event Preparedness and Response (CEPAR), is leading Emory's Ebola Biosafety and Infectious Disease Response Program (Emory IDR). Supported by a grant from the National Institute for Environmental Health and Safety's recently established Worker Training Program, the IDR offers training for health care workers, first responders, laboratory technicians, transportation and maintenance personnel, and workers in other occupations who may be exposed to infectious diseases. The Emory IDR has already provided training to more than 600 workers in frontline professions throughout Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, and Kentucky, leveraging the years of preparation that preceded, and the crucial experience acquired during, the 2014 Ebola crisis, to disseminate expertise in protecting workers from infectious disease as widely as possible.
