SOM Staff Awards

The School of Medicine is committed to recognizing, appreciating, developing, and celebrating our talented and dedicated staff who play a crucial role in fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement in our school. To showcase exemplary practices and transformative initiatives in the areas of leadership; diversity, equity, and inclusion; service, innovation and more, the Staff Recognition and Engagement Committee hosted the inaugural SOM Staff Awards Ceremony in December 2023 which recognized seven individuals and two teams.



2023 Winners Spotlight

Excellence in Leadership Award Lynne Morelock-Roy Division of Animal Resources

The Excellence in Leadership Award honors a staff member for visionary leadership, service, and transformative action at the department level. Lynne Morelock-Roy, Division Administrator in the Division of Animal Resources (DAR), was recognized for her work in continuing operations during what was described as one of the most trying years in the history of the DAR. Lynne’s leadership allowed the group to persevere and excel in a tight labor market and in the face of significant budget cuts.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award Allen Lee Office of Multicultural Affairs

The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award acknowledges a staff member for their noteworthy efforts in fostering an inclusive and equitable school environment. Award winner Allen Lee, Director of the Office of Multicultural Affairs, was recognized for his exceptional leadership and transformative work in the DEI space which includes roles as the Program Manager for the Emory Pipeline Collaborative, liaison to MD learner affinity groups, facilitator of Implicit Bias training, active member of the SOM Diversity Council, and leader in establishing a dedicated prayer and meditation room in the SOM building for faculty, staff, and learners.

Service Champion Award Claude “CJ” Arnett Division of Animal Resources

The Service Champion Award recognizes a staff member for excellence in service, collaboration with others, exceptional performance, and dedication to School of Medicine community values. Recipient Claude “CJ” Arnett, Operations Manager of Physical Plan and Equipment in the Division of Animal Resources, was recognized for his service in successfully initiating and managing the physical plant and animal care programs at two new locations despite challenges like a tight labor market, inflation, and supply chain issues. CJ’s unwavering commitment has played a crucial role in ensuring the Division of Animal Resources provides a consistent and secure environment for School of Medicine investigators.

Learner Impact Award Lydia Soleil Office of Post-Doctoral Education

The Learner Impact Award was presented to Lydia Soleil, Director of Career Development in the Office of Post-Doctoral Education, for her steadfast commitment to learner success and significant contributions to their development in areas of personal, professional, and academic growth. Her work includes designing workshops that enable postdoctoral fellows to explore multiple career options and cultivating versatile programs that enable them to succeed regardless of career choice. Additionally, she provides one-on-one counseling for postdoc career transitions, earning praise for her consistent adaptability and perseverance in meeting the evolving needs of the postdoctoral fellow community.

Innovation Award Morgan Greenleaf School of Medicine, Georgia CTSA

Morgan Greenleaf, winner of the Innovation Award and Director of Apps and Digital Platforms in the School of Medicine and Georgia CTSA, is described as someone who simply embodies innovation. Key highlights of his work include collaborating with the CTSA’s Innovation Catalyst to guide innovators through the commercialization of biomedical inventions, establishing an innovation-focused lecture series, and creating an innovation pathway for resident physicians. Notably, he has led the AppHatchery, a service aiding faculty and learners in developing over 30 clinically relevant apps, ranging from a cancer patient navigation tool to a digital education tool for pediatric diabetes patients. Morgan's impactful contributions have resulted in nationwide downloads and usage of these apps, showcasing the success of his efforts and his team.

Going the Extra Mile (G.E.M) Award Jovan Brockett Department of Cell Biology

The Going the Extra Mile (G.E.M) Award recognizes two staff members who go above and beyond the routine call of duty making significant, positive impacts on the School of Medicine, departments, programs, or committees from behind the scenes while exhibiting a commitment to excellence. The first awardee, Jovan Brockett, is a Lead Research Specialist in the Department of Cell Biology. He consistently excels in Emory's mission areas of research, service, and education. Noteworthy contributions include leading three independent research projects with three first-authorships, expanding mentorship for junior colleagues, and active participation in various committees, including the SOM Staff Recognition and Engagement Committee and the University Senate.

Going the Extra Mile (G.E.M) Award Micah Chrenek Department of Ophthalmology

The Going the Extra Mile (G.E.M) Award recognizes two staff members who go above and beyond the routine call of duty making significant, positive impacts on the School of Medicine, departments, programs, or committees from behind the scenes while exhibiting a commitment to excellence. Micah Chrenek, the second awardee, is the Department of Ophthalmology’s Research Laboratory Manager. Micah, the core of his research group, efficiently oversees multiple labs, managing laboratories for 8 PIs/faculty. His impactful contributions include enhancing procedures for 19 NIH-sponsored R01 grants and taking the lead in supporting new faculty recruits by facilitating equipment procurement, organizing labs, and ensuring compliance measures at Emory.

Team Excellence Award Emory Laboratory for Innovative Assay Development (ELIAD), Department of Pathology

Two Team Excellence Awards were presented. The first Team Excellence Award acknowledges a basic sciences, laboratory, or clinical research team demonstrating impact through achieved or expected scientific/health outcomes for stakeholders, fostering interdisciplinary partnerships, or innovating in work task approaches. Awarded to the Emory Laboratory for Innovative Assay Development (ELIAD) within the Department of Pathology, ELIAD served as the central laboratory for the Emory University COVID-19 screening program, handling over 150,000 samples, acted as the reference lab for RADx clinical studies, and played a crucial role in the NIH’s RADx Independent Test Assessment Program for Hepatitis C. The ELIAD team consists of Aaron Armstrong, Tyler Baugh, Aneksi Amirah Ellis, Kaleb McLendon, Evelyn Morales, Markayla Sifford, and Zianya Solis.

Team Excellence Award Human Simulation Education Center (HSEC)

The second Team Excellence Award recognizes a non-research team that has significantly impacted internal or external stakeholders. The Human Simulation Education Center (HSEC) was recognized as a team that collaboratively organizes and implements more than 300 human simulations annually across various programs, adapting successfully from in-person to remote simulations within two weeks of the university’s pandemic-induced closure. Despite challenges, they maintained the ability to conduct approximately 70% of scheduled simulations during this period across multiple education programs. The HSEC team consists of Adam Bailey, Dan Brown, Elisa Hoover, Deb Laubscher, Sherry Steward, and Vallea Woodbury.
