SOM Staff Awards

The School of Medicine is committed to recognizing, appreciating, developing, and celebrating our talented and dedicated staff who play a crucial role in fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement in our school. To highlight exemplary practices and transformative initiatives in areas such as leadership; diversity, equity, and inclusion; service; and innovation, the Staff Recognition and Engagement Committee hosted the annual SOM Staff Awards Ceremony in December 2024. This year, seven individuals and three teams were honored. The event also celebrated all of the nominees, with over 70 nominations received from 22 different departments, showcasing the incredible contributions of our staff across the school.

2024 Winners Spotlight

Excellence in Leadership Award Yolanda Hood Office of Medical Education and Student Affairs

The Excellence in Leadership recognizes a staff member who contributes significantly to the success of the School of Medicine through leadership and service. Yolanda Hood, assistant dean of student success and multicultural affairs in the Office of Medical Education and Student Affairs (OMESA), is described as someone who demonstrates transformative, innovative, and inclusive leadership skills by empowering groups and fostering effective change to contribute to the success of the School of Medicine. A few of her many contributions include developing a high school pathway partnership with Atlanta Public Schools aimed at increasing exposure to medicine, advocating for the office’s name change to the Office of Multicultural Affairs to be more inclusive of the SOM’s academic health programs, and helping the team secure funding from the HRSA Health Careers Opportunity grant.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award Suanne “Sam” Engle Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences

The Excellence in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Award recognizes a staff member who has made significant achievements in ensuring the climate of the School of Medicine is characterized by inclusivity and organizational equity through leveraging the varied attributes of diversity in our community. Suanne "Sam" Engle is the communications specialist within the Department of Radiology. In addition to her duties as communications specialist, Suanne serves as co-chair of the department’s DEI committee, where her contributions are described as “indispensable” and “innovative.” Highlights of her work include launching virtual “fireside chats,” fostering meaningful discussions on critical DEI topics, spearheading a series of videos to highlight the diverse and talented faculty and staff within the department, and creating the DEI toolkit that is available on the radiology department website.

Service Champion Award Robert Tweedy Department of Biomedical Informatics

The Service Champion Award recognizes a staff member for excellence in service, collaboration with others, dedication to School of Medicine community values, and exceptional performance. Robert Tweedy, senior manager of information technology in the Department of Biomedical Informatics, is described as someone who is universally recognized for his excellence in service, exceptional performance, unending collaborative spirit, and dedication to the SOM community. Robert joined the department in early 2017 as the junior systems administrator on a two-person IT team. He unexpectedly became the sole IT support person in January 2020 – two months before the COVID pandemic. The transition to fully remote work made the department more reliant on its computational infrastructure than ever, and Robert heroically and effectively addressed every IT need. It is said that the best systems administrators are the ones who do their jobs so well that you don’t even know that they are doing it, and Robert fits that description.

Learner Impact Award Karen Woods Department of Anesthesiology

The Learner Impact Award recognizes a staff member who contributes to learner success in a notable and measurable way through the personal, professional, or academic development of a learner or group of learners above and beyond the expectation of their position. Karen Woods, program manager for the multidisciplinary pain fellowship in the Department of Anesthesiology, is tasked with reviewing and identifying desirable applicants through an unbiased, systematic scoring paradigm. During her time in the role, she has improved the interview experience, creating an efficient schedule for seamlessly matching multiple applicants and faculty in an elegantly designed interview day grid. Most recently, Karen spearheaded the fellowship’s return to in-person recruitment and led the incorporation of Continued Medical Education credit for participating faculty. At a time when 30% of similar programs in the country fail to match, the Emory program’s remarkable match rate is a testament to Karen’s influence and appeal.

Innovation Award Santiago Arconada Alvarez School of Medicine, Georgia CTSA

The Innovation Award recognizes a staff member who has helped drive creativity and innovation in the areas of research, education, or clinical care, resulting in increased efficiency, decreased costs, or increased customer satisfaction in a department or for the School of Medicine. Santiago Arconada Alvarez is the associate director of apps and digital platforms within the School of Medicine under the Georgia CTSA. Santiago is described as someone who has consistently demonstrated excellence through his innovative approaches and who has had a profound impact on the institution through his work with the AppHatchery and Extended Reality Innovation Center. Highlights of his efforts include spearheading the development of the “Fabla” mobile app (which reimagines the traditional daily diary methodology by harnessing the power of voice recording technology on smartphones), pioneering the implementation of Limited English Proficiency (an innovative mobile app that addresses language barriers between nurses, patients, and patient caregivers at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta), and leveraging his role as scientific director of the Extended Reality Innovation Center to study gender bias education.

Going the Extra Mile (G.E.M) Award Stephanie Carroll Department of Radiation Oncology

The Going the Extra Mile (GEM) Award recognizes staff members who go above and beyond the routine call of duty and positively impact the School of Medicine, departments, programs, or committees from behind the scenes while exhibiting a commitment to excellence. Stephanie Carroll, program director in the Department of Radiation Oncology, is internally referred to as the “Director of Faculty Development,” as she is the individual who makes it possible for the department’s faculty to thrive. She is involved in many important areas, from recruitment and promotions to nominations and staff support. She develops and launches department initiatives, volunteers when others are overloaded, and provides exceptional quality work while serving as a capable partner to the chair. Her contributions include support for creating an entirely new division, the Division of Health Services Outcomes and Policy, within the department, developing a departmental mentorship network, and developing a departmental newsletter.

Team Excellence Award: Research/Science Department of Biomedical Informatics: Clinical & Translational Science Alliance (CTSA) Informatics

The Team Excellence Award: Research/Science is focused on recognizing a basic sciences, laboratory, or clinical research team whose impact is evidenced by achieved or anticipated scientific/health impact on internal or external stakeholders, the establishment of productive interdisciplinary partnerships, or the development and implementation of novel approaches to work tasks. The Clinical and Translational Science Alliance (CTSA) Informatics Research team embodies this award. The team provides critical capabilities ranging from clinical data extraction and infrastructure building to data analytics and machine learning, supporting the CTSA’s mission of providing efficient and effective clinical and translation research support. A major highlight of their work is their support for deploying a home-grown sepsis prediction model to the Epic EMR environment. The team adapted the workflow and data for the Epic environment, developed two processing pipelines into which the predictive model could be deployed, developed Standard Operating Procedures for the model deployment, and supported the evaluation and continued development of the sepsis prediction models. The team’s work has been critical to the success of the predictive model, which can predict sepsis onset up to six hours earlier than the existing CDC sepsis-3 criteria. The Clinical and Translational Science Alliance (CTSA) Informatics Research team includes Sreekar Anugu, Ryan Birmingham, Barney Chan, Nita Deshpande, Dileep Gunda, Venkatesh Javvayi,  Matthew Pagel, Michael Proctor, Chad Robichaux, Julia Schneider, and Megan Schwinne.

Team Excellence Award: Non-Research/Science Division of Animal Resources

The Team Excellence Award: Non-Research/Science focuses on recognizing a non-research team that has significantly impacted internal or external stakeholders. The first recipient of this year's award is the mechanics team within the Division of Animal Resources (DAR). The Division of Animal Resources comprises nine animal facilities across the campus and Executive Park, and the primary responsibility of the DAR mechanics team is the maintenance and repair of the equipment that supports the animals in DAR’s care. The mechanics team is described as focused on high-quality work performed as quickly as possible, often arriving on the scene to evaluate issues and complete repairs within mere minutes of receiving a request. The team is consistently able to find creative ways to keep operations functional even without the resources to complete a full repair at the moment and is often called upon to devise novel applications for the researchers supported by the DAR. The Division of Animal Resources mechanics team includes Cornelius Johnson and Dylan Nelson.

Team Excellence Award: Non-Research/Science Department of Pediatrics: Frontlines of Communities in the United States (FOCUS)

The second Team Excellence Award: Non-Research/Science is awarded to the Frontlines of Communities in the United States (FOCUS) team within the Department of Pediatrics. The goal of the FOCUS team is to implement universal opt-out HIV testing, as recommended by the CDC, in the pediatric emergency department. The team is currently deployed in the Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta pediatric emergency departments and, within one year, has increased HIV testing by 109% across all three PED sites. The team worked diligently with doctors and nurses in the pediatric emergency department to streamline the HIV testing process and ensure that it did not disrupt the current clinical workflows. In addition, they provide weekly education at all three sites to increase awareness of the need for the testing. The Frontlines of Communities in the United States (FOCUS) team includes Jordan Bryant, Melissa Cameron, Sandy Francois, and Bridget Wynn.
