Faculty mentors should be experienced researchers and mentors. They are expected to guide their student in preparing a research proposal, conducting data collection and analysis, and preparing a written manuscript as the final project. Publication of the Discovery project is not required but is encouraged, if possible. Regular meetings and frequent interactions with the mentee are expected.
Faculty mentors should meet the following criteria for Track A:
- Faculty Appointment: Hold a primary or secondary faculty appointment at Emory SOM and be in good standing. Faculty at other schools (e.g., Rollins School of Public Health) can serve as Discovery mentors, but they would still need to meet the criteria below.
- Relevant Expertise: Demonstrate experience in research, medical education, quality improvement, community-engaged research, public health, implementation science, and/or a related field.
- Scholarly Activity: Demonstrate ongoing scholarly activity through at least one of the following within the past five years:

- Five peer-reviewed publications including at least one as first or last author
- Any funded grants as PI or Co-PI
- Scholarly presentations in research, medical education, QI, or community-based projects and/or other evidence that demonstrates leadership and expertise in the area

4. Prior experience in mentoring trainees (students/residents/fellows/junior faculty) for scholarly projects and participation in faculty development in mentoring.
If a faculty member does not meet these requirements, they may arrange to work with the support of an experienced Senior Discovery Co-mentor. After mentoring 2 students under this arrangement, they may be approved to mentor independently. This is designated as Track B.
