Become a Discovery Phase Faculty Mentor

Discovery is a five month period during which all medical students conduct full-time research under the guidance of an experienced faculty mentor. This year's Discovery Phase will run between March 2022 and January 2023. Students will have completed their first year of required clinical courses and are typically looking for an experience in the specialty they are interested in pursuing.

Login to become a mentor

Faculty mentors should be experienced researchers and upon application should meet two requirements:

  1. Authorship of at least 5 peer-reviewed research publications, and
  2. Status as PI on some form of peer-reviewed funding within the past 3 years (can be federal, private foundation, pharmaceutical or internal Emory grant). This is designated Track A.

If a faculty member does not meet the PI requirement, they may arrange to work with the support of an experienced Senior Discovery Co-mentor.  After mentoring 2 students under this arrangement they will be approved to mentor independently. This is designated Track B.

Mentor Expectations

Faculty Mentors are expected to guide their student in preparing a formal Research Proposal, carrying out data collection and analysis to produce a written manuscript as their final project. Publication is not a requirement.  Regular meetings with the mentee and frequent interaction are expected.

We have a database of approved Discovery mentors which is now open for submissions.

Previously approved Discovery mentors: you are already in the system for this year.  Please  take a few minutes to login and update your research description and/or PubMed link to your publications to keep them current.

Once logged in you should see your profile.  Click on the pencil icon on the right to edit.  When finished editing, click the Update Profile button at the bottom.  The research description should be an overview of your research interests, not a specific project.

If you do not wish to have a student this year, send me an email and we will remove you for this year.

Prospective new mentors: please send me your name so that we can add you to the list for access to the system. To apply, you will need to have:

  • a brief description (overview) of your research interests
  • a recent NIH-style biosketch or short form CV with funding information
  • a link to your publications in PubMed

Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions or issues.
