General Questions
Why does accredited education matter to me?
Emory School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) and the American Dental Association's Continuing Education Recognition Program (ADA CERP) to provide continuing education for the health care team. Continuing your professional development from an accredited provider has been proven to improve patient safety, promote learning, and foster teamwork.
What types of content and activity formats can be accredited by Emory CME?
Emory CME can accredit many types of content, including regularly scheduled series, virtual live meetings, in-person live meetings, and internet-based education/enduring materials.
What is required to accredit my educational activity?
The ACCME requires planners to document five steps prior to Emory CME accrediting your activity:
- Educational needs and practice gaps (including sources used to identify these)
- Measurable learning objectives designed to change physician competence, performance, or patient outcomes and aligned to the Emory CME Mission Statement and Expected Results
- Appropriate educational formats for the setting, objectives, and desired results
- Identification of the physician competencies the activity will address
- An evaluation plan to measure learner knowledge, skills, performance, or patient outcomes
In addition, all activities must adhere to the ACCME Standards for Integrity. Financial disclosure of relationships with ineligible companies within the past 24 months must be collected from all planners and speakers. Relationships must be mitigated before planning or activity delivery can commence.
Where can I find sources to justify my educational needs and practice gaps?
You may use professional society guidelines, recent publications, departmental discussion minutes, patient quality and safety data, or many other sources. View this document on writing a practice gap statement, educational needs development description, and learning objectives for further guidance.
CME Credits
What are AMA-PRA Category 1 CreditsTM?
AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM demonstrate that a physician has participated in CME that meets the requirement of various stakeholders including state medical boards and specialty societies. Many other disciplines and credentialling bodies accept the AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ as an equivalent if the topic is relevant to the applicant’s field or discipline. Emory CME is able to offer documentation of hours of instruction for non-physician learners.
How can I resolve issues with claiming CME credits?
Issues often arise from having multiple profiles. Merging profiles should resolve the problem. For assistance, contact Mercede Alexander at Mercede.Alexander@emory.edu.
How long after I attend an event can I claim CME credit?
Typically seven days.
Text-In Attendance
How do I use text-in-attendance to record my participation?
Text the designated keyword or code, provided by the event organizer, to the specified phone number. Follow any additional instructions given for the event.
Can I text my attendance after the event if I forgot to do it during the event?
If you miss the text-in during the event, check with the activity director or program coordinator to see if a grace period is available or contact the event organizer for guidance. Policies on late submissions vary by event. Typically, CME credit must be claimed within seven days of attendance.
How will I know if my attendance was recorded successfully?
A confirmation message is usually sent to confirm that your attendance has been recorded. If you do not receive a confirmation, please verify with the event organizer or contact the CME office.
