Dunwoody Golfers Raise Funds for Prostate Cancer Research

August 2016

The 20th Annual Golf Outing held on May 10, 2016, at Dunwoody Country Club raised $225,000 to benefit prostate cancer research at Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University, distinguishing the Dunwoody Country Club Champions Golf Association as the most successful community fundraising organization on the behalf of prostate cancer research at Winship. Fundraising is done in the name of the late John H. Kauffman, and all proceeds will be matched dollar for dollar by Winship through its own fundraising efforts.

Upon the suggestion of Mr. Kaufman, who was a member of both DCC and Winship's Advisory Board, DCC's annual event began donating directly to Winship in 2009. Mr. Kaufman's active involvement on the Advisory Board afforded much-needed insight, and he consistently advocated for improved access to treatment for cancer patients across the state. Mr. Kaufman passed away in 2013.

"We enjoy a tremendous partnership and friendship with the Champions Golf Association at Dunwoody Country Club," says Emory Urology Chair Martin Sanda, MD. "Proceeds from their annual tournament and gifts from other supporters have enabled us, in part, to recruit a cadre of the best and brightest prostate cancer scientists to Emory Urology and Winship Cancer Institute; research new urine tests for prostate cancer screening and detection; open a multi-disciplinary prostate cancer clinic at Emory St. Joseph's Hospital; and so much more."

Last year's DCC fundraiser yielded $215,000, which rose to $430,000 with Winship's matching funds and was applied to finding new ways of diagnosing and treating prostate cancer. The prostate cancer pilot grants that were funded in 2015 were:

"Biogenesis and Regulation of Long Noncoding RNAs (IncRNAs) in Prostate Cancer"
PI: Anita Corbett, PhD, Professor of Biochemistry
Co-Investigator: Carlos Moreno, PhD, Associate Professor of Pathology

"Contemporary Utilization of Multiparametric Magnetic Resonance Image-Guided Prostate Biopsy: Impact on Treatment Patterns and Health Care Costs"
