Dear patients, colleagues, trainees, and visitors,
Welcome to the Emory Division of Plastic Surgery, a center distinguished not only by its geographical reach beyond the borders of Georgia but also by its profound commitment to innovation and excellence in the field. Our division is propelled by a history of significant advancements, especially in the area of breast reconstruction—a field in which our surgeons have been nationally recognized leaders.
Under the pioneering leadership of Dr. Maurice Jurkiewicz, our graduates have contributed groundbreaking developments such as the musculocutaneous flap. The late Dr. John Bostwick set a foundational standard in the 1980s with his pioneering work in autologous tissue breast reconstruction. This was further refined by Dr. Carlson in the 1990s with the development of the skin-sparing mastectomy. More recently, in the mid-2000s, Dr. Albert Losken advanced the field of oncoplastic breast surgery, building upon the principles established by Dr. Bostwick.
Our residency program, ranked among the top ten nationally, offers two ACGME-approved tracks. The independent track, established for decades, is a three-year commitment for those who have completed five years of an ACGME-recognized clinical general surgery residency, qualifying them for certification by the American Board of Surgery. Each year, we select two residents for this track. Additionally, our integrated track admits two medical school graduates annually into a comprehensive six-year program. Together, these programs form a vibrant community of 18 residents, continually fostering the next generation of plastic surgery innovators.
Our esteemed faculty of 11 dedicated professionals provides unparalleled patient care across six facilities in Atlanta. Each member brings a wealth of expertise and a deep commitment to both patient outcomes and academic excellence.
