Cell Biology News

Semi-Annual Notable News

Fall 2023

Dr. Sulagna Das Joins Cell Biology Faculty

Sulagna Das, PhD, headshot

Cell Biology welcomes Sulagna Das, PhD, who will join the department in January 2024 as an Assistant Professor of Cell Biology and Human Genetics. Dr. Das was previously a Research Assistant Professor in Cell Biology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, NY. Her new lab, located on 4th floor WBRB, will investigate the dynamics and regulation of RNAs in neuronal health and diseases using high-resolution imaging technologies.

The Das lab will work at the interface of RNA biology and neuroscience with the overarching goal to investigate the spatio-temporal control of RNAs during synapse development and plasticity and the dysregulation in neurological diseases. Neurons are highly polarized cells that can extend processes far from the cell body and therefore face the unique challenge of delivering proteins on demand to distal synapses. RNA localization to the right place and at the right time empowers the neuron to regulate protein synthesis with extraordinary precision and is critical for synaptic functions. Dysregulation of mRNA localization and local translation has been associated with many neurodevelopmental and neurological diseases. The lab seeks to understand how mRNAs are regulated in space and time, and the mechanisms that govern “local” gene expression changes in the brain in response to neuronal activity. Their approach is to visualize the life cycle of mRNAs in neurons at single-molecule resolution and in real time by utilizing state-of-the-art imaging technologies, RNA tagging methods, and knock-in mouse models. By taking a high-resolution dive into RNA biology and neuroscience, the Das lab aims to uncover novel spatial and temporal insights into gene expression regulation in neuronal health and diseases.

Cell Biology Rising Stars

Cell Biology has several junior faculty and postdoctoral fellows who recently received NIH or equivalent career development awards.

Lindsey Seldin, PhD, Assistant Professor, received a US DEPT OF VETERAN AFFAIRS Career Development award along with her lab research specialist, Michael Hamersky.

This grant will fund research investigating the role of the tumor microenvironment in cutaneous skin cancer development using transgenic, intravital imaging, and transcriptomic approaches.

Alan Emanuel, PhD, Assistant Professor, received an NIH K99 grant titled, "Contextual Representation of Tactile Information in Mouse Primary Somatosensory Cortex."

Dr. Alan Emanuel

Ryan Purcell, PhD, Assistant Professor, received an NIH K01 grant titled, "Phenotypic convergence at mitochondria in copy number variant disorders."

Ryan Purcell, PhD

Postdoctoral fellow Junnan Fang, PhD, received an NIH K99 grant titled, "Isoform expression and post-transcriptional regulation of centrosomal plp mRNA."

Junnan Fang, PhD

Postdoctoral fellow Yaqing (Celia) Li, PhD, received a Craig H Neilsen Foundation award titled, "Property of thoracic sympathetic postganglionic neurons after spinal cord injury."

Yaqing (Celia) Li

Postdoctoral fellow Devesh Pant, PhD, received a development grant from Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). This career development grant will provide three-year support on his proposal titled “Investigation of ALS caused by mutant KIF5A”. MDA is the nation’s largest nonprofit supporter of neuromuscular research facilitating researchers to advance their research and careers.

Gary Bassell, PhD

New Society Election

Gary Bassell, PhD, Charles Howard Candler Professor of Cell Biology and Department Chair, was elected president of the Association of Anatomy, Cell Biology, and Neurobiology Chairs (AACBNC).

The Association of Anatomy, Cell Biology and Neurobiology Chairpersons (AACBNC) is an organization of chairs, interim chairs, or permanent substitutes appointed by the Chair of departments of anatomy, cell biology and neurobiology, or equivalent organizational units, in schools of medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine and osteopathic medicine or in universities granting Ph.D. degrees in these disciplines in the United States, Puerto Rico and Canada shall be eligible for membership.

Jill Ward, PhD

Board Nomination

Jill Ward, PhD, was nominated to the Scientific Advisory Board for The International Symposium for Neural Repair. Since 1985, The ISNR has met every 2 years and is the premier forum for the presentation and discussion of progress, insights and controversies important to advancing the understanding of injury responses and potential therapeutics targeting peripheral nerve and central nervous system injuries. Dr. Ward will serve a 3-year term.

Kenneth Myers, PhD headshot

New Grant

Kenneth Myers, PhD, Assistant Professor, received a Whitehall Foundation grant, “Coordinating Synaptic Actin and Translational Control”. The Whitehall Foundation supports early career investigators studying basic research in neurobiology, with the goal of better understanding brain mechanisms of behavior.

This three-year grant will allow the Myers lab to investigate how the LASP family proteins coordinate actin cytoskeletal remodeling during synaptic plasticity. This work is expected to identify new regulatory mechanisms underlying the control of synaptic strength and neural circuit dynamics in the brain.

New Recognition

Douglas Falls, MD, Associate Professor Emeritus, was selected for 2023 Educator Appreciation Day. Dr. Falls played a central role in orchestrating the Foundations of Medicine curriculum. His efforts as Foundations of Medicine curricular coordinator were highly regarded by students, faculty, and administrators. Dr. Falls is a very successful and creative course director and teacher.

URC awards recipients - Dr. Noble, Raj, and Faundez for 2023

New URC Awards

Don Noble, PhD, Nisha Raj, PhD, and Victor Faundez, PhD, were awarded an Emory URC grant. The University Research Committee (URC), oversees a competitive, annual research grant program to support research and creative projects in fields with limited external funding, or to explore new areas of research that are likely to attract future external support.

Win Sale Graduate Student Travel Awards

The Department of Cell Biology announced The Win Sale Graduate Student Travel Awards for BCDB students. Travel awards in the amount $1000 each are available for BCDB graduate students working in the lab of a Cell Biology faculty member.  The travel support would be to attend ASCB or other cell biology focused conferences. Funding is anticipated to cover a total of ten awards over the next few years.

The travel award is made possible by the generation donation of Dr. Elizabeth Smith, Professor and Dean at Dartmouth. Dr. Smith was Win Sale's first graduate student in his lab at Emory. She was an invited speaker at the symposium in honor of Win Sale that in April 2022.

Arthur English and Criss Hartzell

Arthur English, PhD, and Criss Hartzell, PhD were selected by the Emory University School of Medicine for the 2023 Researcher Appreciation Day recognitions.
