Semi-Annual Notable News

Fall 2023

Dr. Seema Lakdawala Featured in "I am an Emory Researcher"

Seema Lakdawala, PhD

Seema Lakdawala, PhD, Associate Professor, was featured in the Emory publication, I am an Emory Researcher, for her research on understanding influenza viruses and how they transmit through the air from person to person.

“Similar to SARS-2 or COVID-19, we know that influenza viruses can transmit long range with small aerosols,” Lakdawala says. “They can also transmit short range with larger droplets. They can transmit through contaminated surfaces and through direct contact. All these modes are possible and can lead to an infection.”

First Annual M&I Postdoctoral Symposium, October 27, 2023

Julie Pfeiffer, PhD

The Department of Microbiology & Immunology will host a symposium highlighting the research of the department’s Postdoctoral Fellows on Friday, October 27, 2023, Whitehead Auditorium, 2:00 - 5:30 pm.

The department Postdoc Club invited a Keynote Speaker, Dr. Julie Pfeiffer, from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. She will give a talk “How bacteria and circadian rhythms influence enteric virus infecKon”. Please see the attached flyer and mark your calendars to attend.

Following Dr. Pfeiffer’s talk, postdocs will present a series of research talks. There is a Call for Abstracts – all postdoctoral fellows in Microbiology and Immunolgy labs across various locations are encouraged to participate – the deadline for abstracts was September 15th (Abstract guidelines and submission here).  In addition to the talks there are several opportunities for postdocs to meet with Dr. Pfeiffer in small group settings throughout her visit.

Ketaki Ganti Wiser, Ph.D is the President of the department Postdoc Club. She and a group of others are working to put this event together. If you have questions please contact Ketaki.

Microbiology and Immunology is excited about the inaugural Postdoc Symposium and all are welcome to participate and to attend.

Celebration of Dr. John K. Spitznagel’s 100th Birthday and Seminar

On April 10, 2023, the department of Microbiology and Immunology celebrated the 100th birthday of Dr. John K. Spitznagel, MD, FACP, former department chair, with Dr. Jeremy Boss as the 25th annual seminar speaker. Dr. Boss spoke on, "Transcriptional and epigenetic regulation of B cell immune responses."

Dr. Spitznagel is a professor emeritus of microbiology and immunology at Emory and a former advisor to the National Institutes of Health. He is best-known for his groundbreaking work in bacteriology and infectious disease research.

From 1957 until 1979, Dr. Spitznagel was a professor of microbiology and infectious diseases at the University of North Carolina. In 1979 he became a professor and chair of the department of microbiology and immunology at Emory University, a position he considers to be a career highlight. He was granted professor emeritus status in 1993. In 2002, he helped co-found the Good Samaritan Health and Wellness Center in Jasper, Georgia, where he continued to see patients as an attending physician until 2012.

Dr. Spitznagel was the first scientist to demonstrate cationic antimicrobial proteins in leukocyte granules and was the co-discoverer of an antimicrobial cationic protein in polymorphic granules, among other significant discoveries.
