Mark S. Burton, PhD
Implementation Director
Dr. Burton earned his PhD from Case Western Reserve University. He completed his predoctoral internship at the Charleston Consortium and his postdoctoral fellowship at the Emory Healthcare Veterans Program, where he trained in novel PE delivery models under the supervision of Dr. Rothbaum and Dr. Rauch. Dr. Burton is the founder of several psychotherapy training programs. His career is focused on training others in evidence-based treatment models and translating findings from clinical trial research to real-world clinical training and practice. Dr. Burton often describes the PE Consultant Training Program consultation meetings as his “favorite part of the week” and is dedicated to disseminating this life saving treatment.Sheila A. M. Dr. Rauch has provided PTSD and anxiety disorders treatment for over 20 years. She is currently Principal Investigator of two PTSD treatment outcomes and mechanisms trials including a DOD funded, multi-site PTSD treatment trial comparing prolonged exposure and sertraline and a VA/DOD collaboratively-funded trial examining biomarkers in active duty military service members completing psychotherapy. Her research focuses on translational treatment outcomes and modifications of proven treatments for use in alternate settings, such as primary care. She has published scholarly articles and book chapters in the areas of anxiety disorders and PTSD focusing on neurobiology and factors involved in the development, maintenance and treatment of anxiety disorders, psychosocial factors in medical settings and the relation between physical health and anxiety.
Barbara O. Rothbaum, PhD, ABPP
Co-Executive Director
Dr. Rothbaum has devoted her career to developing and testing new treatments for PTSD. Dr. Rothbaum is an inventor of virtual reality exposure therapy and pioneered applying the treatment for PTSD in combat veterans. She has authored over 300 scientific papers and chapters and co-authored the manuals for prolonged exposure therapy that are disseminated throughout the VA hospital system. She has published five books on the treatment of PTSD and edited three others on anxiety, as well as received the Diplomate in Behavioral Psychology from the American Board of Professional Psychology.
Andrew M. Sherrill, PhD
Training Director
Dr. Sherrill is an assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Emory University School of Medicine, where he previously completed his postdoctoral fellowship under the mentorship of Dr. Rauch and Dr. Rothbaum. He earned his PhD from Northern Illinois University and completed his predoctoral internship at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System, American Lake Division. Dr. Sherrill has authored over 50 papers in the areas of PTSD, aggression, exposure therapy and clinical technologies (e.g., virtual reality and mHealth). His current research founded by the National Science Foundation aims to understand how to ethically design, develop and deploy ubiquitous computing and artificial intelligence solutions within the context of exposure therapies. He has been the Training Director of the PE Consultant Training Program since 2019 and views his facilitation of clinicians’ “PE Journey” as a profound and privileged professional service.Advisory Board of Training Program
