Miriam Velcime is a third-year doctoral student in the Counseling Psychology PhD program at the University of Georgia. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor in Biology from Stony Brook University and her Master of Science in Psychology from Mercy University.
As a first-generation Haitian American, Miriam is dedicated to addressing healthcare disparities affecting mothers of the African and Caribbean diasporas. She is committed to advancing mental healthcare through both research and clinical practice, with a focus on promoting equitable access to resources and support for diverse communities.
In her clinical work, Miriam employs an integrated approach that draws from relational cultural theory, acceptance and commitment therapy, Black feminist thought and cognitive behavioral therapy. Miriam is passionate about providing culturally responsive care that meets the unique needs of each individual.
Miriam strives to bridge her academic knowledge with real-world experience, advocating for mental health equity and the well-being of underserved communities. Outside of her professional pursuits, Miriam enjoys tending to her garden, cooking Haitian meals and listening to music.
