ENTICe crosses the boundaries of traditional academic departments and scientific disciplines to focus on the specific goal of advancing research in neuromodulation and translating basic science findings into novel clinical treatments.
ENTICe coordinates and supports scientists, biomedical engineers, clinicians and others at Emory and its academic partners that are involved in the development of neuromodulation technologies and other efforts for the treatment of neurologic and psychiatric disorders. The relationship among these groups is of critical importance as medical research and technology becomes more multi-disciplinary.
The collaborative environment at ENTICe allows for a fluid and seamless exchange of ideas and insights and also encourages new collaborations to develop among those researchers who have a shared interest in clinical research. ENTICe serves as a shared platform for research and translational neuroscience advancements where knowledge, technical assistance and funds are systematically distributed throughout the program.

The Emory and Georgia Tech Partnership
ENTICe physician scientists are internationally known pioneers for the development of clinical neuromodulation treatments, particularly deep brain stimulation. Georgia Tech scientists have a strong record of using engineering approaches such as neural signal analysis, simulations and real-time manipulation of neural circuits to advance the quantitative understanding of neural function. Many clinical and translational projects in brain health critically depend on close collaboration between these two institutions.
ENTICe History
Emory Neuromodulation Technology Innovation Center (ENTICe) was founded in early 2010s by the founding members. The initial focus was on advancing pioneering work in deep brain stimulation for Parkinson’s disease, depression and epilepsy. In time, ENTICe became a partnership between clinical departments at Emory University (Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry) and a joint Biomedical Engineering (BME) Department (between Emory University and Georgia Tech) with its Neural Engineering Center. The goal was to further advance the neuromodulation field by developing commercializable technologies. For many years, ENTICe was directed by Bob Gross, a neurosurgeon who was one of the founders and its strongest champion. In mid 2020s, ENTICe was expanded to include all translational technologies in brain health space.
