Monique was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. After completing her undergraduate education with a major in Human Biology at Stanford University, she spent time at Columbia University completing research in Huntington’s Disease. She matriculated to the University of Virginia, but subsequently took time out after her 3rd year to pursue research in the HHMI-NIH research scholar’s program. Her project involved understanding the role or regulatory T-cells in HTLV-1 associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). The project continued to evolve after staying a second year, and eventually became the subject of her PhD dissertation, which focused on the role of exosomes in immune responses to HTLV-1 in HAM/TSP patients. After returning to UVa for completion of her clinical training, she continued to foster an interest in the intersection between neuroimmunology and neuroinfectious diseases, ultimately choosing to complete neurology residency at Emory. Outside of neurology, Monique’s interests include trivia, baseball, dancing, and exploring the Belt Line.
