Located in the heart of the historic “Sweet Auburn” district of Atlanta, Grady is one of the largest and busiest county hospitals in the world. With over 135,000 ED visits and nearly 28,000 hospital admissions annually, Grady provides neurology residents with an unmatched level of diversity, both in patient cultural backgrounds and disease processes. The neurology division, led by Mike Frankel, M.D., consists entirely of Emory faculty who are devoted to training the next generation of academic neurologists.
Grady offers a full spectrum of inpatient and outpatient neurology services, including an inpatient ward and consultation service; outpatient clinics; and neurophysiology services, including continuous EEG monitoring. In 2010, the Marcus Stroke and Neuroscience Center opened; this state-of-the-art center includes a new 18-bed neurointensive care unit, a 19-bed step-down unit, an imaging suite with a 64-slice CT scanner, and the world’s only dedicated neuroangiography suite housed on the unit. Certified as an Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center by the Joint Commission, the Marcus Stroke and Neuroscience Center was recognized by the American Stroke Association in 2016 for performing at the very highest level of stroke care. More thrombectomies are performed at the Marcus Stroke & Neuroscience Center than any other hospital in the United States.
Grady has played a pivotal role in stroke-related clinical trials since the 1990s, when it became the first hospital in the southeast with a 24-hour acute stroke team. Since then, Grady has been and continues to be a top recruiting site for many practice-changing multicenter trials, including the NINDS tPA Stroke Trial, the TREVO-2 trial, the CRISP trial, the SwiftPrime trial, and the DAWN trial. Residents interested in research will have the opportunity to participate in a multitude of projects currently underway at Grady.
