Course Information
Emory offers a three-day Diabetes Educator Certificate seminar that is open to nurses, dietitians, pharmacists, social workers, and others with present or planned involvement in the management and education of individuals with diabetes. Multidiscipline health care teams interested in organizing or improving a diabetes program are especially encouraged to attend. Professionals preparing to take the Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) examination will find the course facilitates their study.
This activity is approved for 26.4 continuing education hours by the American Nursing Credentialing Center (ANCC), and 26 continuing education hours by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) and the Commission on Dietetics Registration (CDR).
Time is allocated for observations in the clinical setting with members of the health care team of your choice.
Enrollment will be limited to 20 participants per session.
*Completion of the Emory Diabetes Course does not guarantee successful passage of the CDE® exam. CDE is a registered mark owned by NCBDE. NCBDE does not endorse any preparatory or review materials for the CDE® exam.

Course Objectives
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of diabetes pathophysiology, epidemiology and clinical guidelines consistent with a diabetes educator practice level
- Describe the complications of diabetes and identify appropriate pharmacological treatment options
- Provide diabetes support and care in a culturally-competent manner across the lifespan
- Apply principles of teaching, learning and behavior change to facilitate self-management skills on individuals with diabetes
- Recognize the importance of an interdisciplinary diabetes care team
- Identify principles of program management to systematically improve the delivery of diabetes education in their practice setting
- Develop a process involving assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the patient's diabetes education intervention
- Describe and apply the AADE7 self-care behavior framework as a guide to the delivery of diabetes education
Course Requirements
- Degree or diploma in a health profession
- This course is designed for clinicians who care for persons with diabetes in their general practice but who have not received specialized entry-level training in diabetes disease management
- This course is also open to students preparing to take their licensure examination
