19th Annual Hamilton E. Holmes Lecture
Emory University School of Medicine annually hosts a lecture in honor of Dr. Hamilton E. Holmes, the first African American to graduate from Emory SOM. The most recent installment, held on February 16, 2023, was entitled "In Our Hands: Improving Health Outcomes for Black Mothers and Infants" and featured a panel of healthcare experts.

Diversity and Inclusion Week is an annual school-wide celebration of the broad range of identities and experiences that make up the Emory School of Medicine's diverse community. The week features a wide range of lectures, cultural activities, and programs showcasing DEI efforts and successes fostered by our students, trainees, faculty, and staff.

National Medical Association Professional Development Series
The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc. (CBCF) partners with the National Medical Association (NMA) to present an annual Professional Development Series (PDS) that focuses on the clinical, policy, and social determinants of health. The NMA PDS is held as part of the CBCF's Annual Legislative Conference, which is the leading policy conference on issues impacting African Americans and the global black community.
The 2023 program addressed a number of important issues, recently introduced legislative proposals, and initiatives surrounding the disparities that exist with access to care, redetermination, viability of the physician workforce, physician reimbursement, maternal health, and HIV/AIDS.
Improving Diversity in the Genomics Workforce
The Roundtable on Genomics and Precision Health of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine hosted a public workshop that examined the current state of diversity of the genetics and genomics workforce, the factors that have contributed and continue to influence diversity challenges, and possible steps forward that could lead to increasing workforce diversity as a way to improve access to genomic services.
The workshop featured invited presentations and discussions addressing such topics as:

Historical perspectives on racism and its impact on the culture of the fields of genetics and genomics;

Ways in which the genetics/genomics workforce is or is not uniquely affected by structural racism;

Current and ongoing workforce diversity efforts of genetics/genomics professional organizations and other groups;

Implications of diversifying the workforce for patient care and access to genomic services; and
-
Next steps and roles for institutions, societies, associations, community organizations, and other stakeholders for fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion in this area.
PRIDE Month Activities & Events

- PBS host a variety of programming dedicated to Pride Month, including "Stonewall Uprising," which examines the police raid on the Stonewall Inn on June 28,1969, considered a turning point in the modern gay civil rights movement. Find this and other Pride Month films, series, and short stories in PBS' Pride Month Spotlight section.
- PRIDE is a six-part documentary series chronicling the struggle for LGBTQ+ civil rights in America from the 1950s through the 2000s. Available on Hulu.
Giving Voice: The Rest of His Story with Dr. Marion Hood
In 1959, Dr. Marion G. Hood applied to Emory School of Medicine, but was denied consideration for admission due to his race. Despite this obstacle, he went on to have a long and distinguished career in the field of gynecology and obstetrics. During Emory's virtual celebration of Juneteenth on June 17, 2021, the SOM formally apologized to Dr. Hood and invited him to share the rest of his story. His message of tenacity and resilience was inspiring to our students, faculty, and staff. Watch the video below.
