Overview
I am particularly interested in designing within healthcare and training engineering and technology students about how to work with clinicians and in clinical environments. My past research projects have included the effects of ambient noise on emergency departments, use of micro-fluidics to measure mechanical platelet activation, the difference of attitudes of field providers and medical control physicians towards the use of opiod analgesia, and the application of computer graphics technologies to ultrasound guided and laparoscopic procedures. I have worked extensively with faculty and students at Georgia Tech and teach an undergraduate clinical immersion course called Clinical Observational Design Experience.
Academic Appointment
- Assistant Professor, PhD Program Faculty, Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech and Emory University
- Assistant Professor, Department of Emergency, Emory University
Education
Degrees
- PhD Biomedical Engineering from University of North Carolina
- MD from University of North Carolina
- BSE System Science and Engineering from Washington University
- BS Biology and Engineering Sciences from Washington University in St. Louis
Research
Focus
- I am interested in finding medical applications for emerging technologies and enabling technologists who want to apply their techniques to healthcare. Specific areas of interest include the effects of the sound environment on clinical performance, development of novel medical devices, development of low-cost training aids, and simulation of healthcare environments.
