SPOTLIGHT, July 2018

KIM FUGATE, Associate Director, Simulation Lab

What makes Emory’s state-of-the-art, high fidelity simulation facility in the School of Medicine tick? A staff of simulation operational wizards headed by Kim Fugate.

Fugate and her team work with faculty along with information technologists, simulation specialists, and others to make challenging clinical scenarios come to life in a safe practice space for learners—to the ultimate benefit of patients and the safety and quality of their care.

Fugate has held the prestigious designation as Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) since 2015. This formal endorsement of skills and specialized knowledge recognizes select individuals from 24 countries who meet criteria including success on a rigorous examination conducted by an international academic society, the Society for Simulation in Healthcare.

Working behind the scenes to control highly realistic mannequins, simulated medical equipment, and task trainers, Fugate also manages inventory, budgets, and maintenance systems that keep ExCEL humming. Medical students, residents, fellows, faculty, practicing physicians, and their clinical colleagues respond positively to simulation activities, now a requirement for many accredited programs in graduate medical education. A bridge-builder and enthusiastic collaborator, Kim welcomes inquiries about new and innovative ways to move clinical learning and quality in healthcare forward.
