Yvonne Shyntum, J.D., Ph.D.
Molecular and Systems Pharmacology Program: Class of 2005
Yvonne Shyntum, J.D., Ph.D., is an intellectual property lawyer in Atlanta, Georgia. She has extensive experience on all aspects of patent prosecution, due diligence and portfolio management in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries.
"I had advisors who were focused on my academic growth," said Yvonne. "I could walk into Dean’s office and talk to him about research and about my future. My Ph.D. committee was equally very supportive and I would say it was overall a positive experience."
Yvonne's skills and knowledge from the MSP program gave her a sophisticated understanding of complex science and technology that prepared her for the work force.
"First, I learned technical information which set the foundation for understanding invention disclosures and literature in the life sciences field," said Yvonne. "I also learned the course material, how to conduct research, critical thinking skills, essential writing skills to clearly convey scientific information, and invaluable public speaking skills for presentations of my research or scientific publications."
In addition to Yvonne's academic and technical training at Emory, Yvonne learned the importance of the greater Emory community and its resources.
"Do not be afraid to pursue whatever career path you are interested in after graduation, including careers outside academia. Talk to advisors about career opportunites and find out how you can connect with other students and postdocs they have trained who have ended up in different paths," advised Yvonne. "Academic seminars are also a great way to find out about different career paths as they have a diverse range of speakers from different fields."
Yvonne also advised students to reach out to alumni who have gone down a similar path as they are happy to help.
