A MESSAFE FROM THE PROGRAM DIRECTOR
Emory University Hospital and Grady Hospital (Marcus Stroke & Neuroscience Center) serve as major primary care and tertiary referral centers for patients with Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases from Atlanta and much of the Southeast. Emory University’s program at Grady Hospital was one of a few select sites that participated in the ground breaking NINDS tPA trial for patients with acute ischemic stroke.
The division of vascular neurology maintains 4 one-year ACGME fellowship positions. There are six academically productive vascular neurology faculty members who have a broad range of subspecialization. Vascular Neurology faculty provide expert care in the management of patients with acute ischemic stroke, intracerebral hemorrhage, subarachnoid hemorrhage, cerebral aneurysms, cerebral venous thrombosis, extracranial carotid and vertebral stenosis, and intracranial arterial stenosis. The program offers exposure to therapeutic interventions (angioplasty, stenting, intra-arterial thrombolysis, thrombectomy, aneurysm coiling) to patients with ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke and cerebrovascular diseases.
Fellows have a broad range of exposure with over 1300 stroke admissions across both campuses and extensive experience in ultrasonography and stroke rehabilitative services.
Fellows will spend a total of 8 months on clinical service, 3 months of elective time and one month of vacation. They will be exposed to a breadth of clinical experiences with a very active acute stroke program with expanding rates of IV tPA delivery and endovascular reperfusion therapies. Moreover, there are several ongoing clinical trials surrounding the acute and subacute phases of stroke. Each fellow will be a sub-investigator and learn the methodology of clinical trial recruitment, development and implementation. Additionally, each fellow will be expected to perform quality improvement project to enhance care delivery of stroke patients throughout the system. Clinical education is enhanced through a didactic curriculum consisting of a weekly conference, grand rounds, and regular journal clubs.
Successful completion of an ACGME-accredited neurology residency is required.
