Christine M. Dunham, PhD, Assistant Professor of Biochemistry, has received a highly competitive and prestigious Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease (PATH) Award from the Burroughs Wellcome. This award is given to junior faculty members who have shown independence in their research program. The challenging application process consists of a pre-proposal, a full written proposal, and ultimately a five-minute presentation to sell one's project to a panel of Infectious Disease experts with only ~10 grants awarded each year. This five year award will support research on determining the molecular basis of action of toxin-antitoxin complexes that activate the bacterial persistent or antibiotic tolerant state in response to stress.
