New Student IT Checklist

Please reach out to SOMITS if you need any assistance with the steps below.

Step 1 - Submit a completed New SOM Student BYOD Compliance Form.

Step 2 - Setup your laptop / smartphone with an SOMITS team member during your class’ IT orientation or schedule a 1-on-1 session by sending an email to meded-help@emory.edu (for Anesthesiology Assistant students, please reach out to your program's local support for device setup assistance).

Step 3 - Either attend a new student IT orientation with your class or review it here (see below).

Student Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD) Requirements

All SOM students are required to have a laptop and a smartphone that meets or exceeds SOMITS' minimum requirements, per the Student Handbook IT policy.

Student BYOD Laptop Requirements (Minimum):

While not required, we strongly recommend laptops be no more than 4 years old from date of purchase.

  • Memory:  8GB RAM
  • Hard Drive Storage:  256GB HDD or SSD (Less than 256GB ok, but may need ext. storage)
  • CPU:  Intel i7 (Mac or PC)
  • OS (PC):  Windows 10 (64-bit) version 20H2. Alternate versions (RT, Win10/11 S mode) not supported.
  • OS (MAC):  MacOS 12 (Monterey)
  • Screen Resolution:  1366 x 768 pixels
  • Emory WiFi Compatibility:  WiFi 802.11g (802.11n better, 802.11ac best)
  • Antivirus: An antivirus must be installed / working properly.  Examples include:
    • Windows Defender (PC)
    • Microsoft Safety Scanner (PC)
    • Malwarebytes (PC / MAC)
    • Sophos (PC / MAC)
    • Adaware (PC)
    • Avira (MAC)
  • Prohibited Device Manufacturers:
    • Huawei

  • OS:  iOS or Android.
  • Smartphone Manufacturer / Model:  Any manufacturer / model smartphone capable of running Duo on iOS or Android.
