Dr. Heron is Professor of Emergency Medicine, Vice-Chair of Faculty Equity, Engagement and Empowerment for Emergency Medicine and Associate Dean for Community Engagement, Equity and Inclusion, Emory School of Medicine.
Dr. Heron is a member of the Injury Prevention Resource Center at Emory (IPRCE) Steering Committee and has served as the Associate Director for Training and Education since 2008. She is also a co-chair for the IPRCE Violence Prevention Task Force and a member of the Injury Prevention Certificate Advisory Committee. Dr. Heron is a practicing emergency medicine physician and is a leader in working directly with patients who have experienced intimate partner violence (IPV). Dr. Heron supports the Core by providing her administrative and teaching skills in developing the Brown Bag Lecture Series, and educational and training opportunities designed for medical professionals, residents and students.
Dr. Heron has 20 years of experience in direct treatment of injury at one of the country’s leading trauma centers which provides her with tremendous insight into patient and family dynamics and shared risk factors of injury patients. She also trains professionals, physicians and medical students on IPV, and identifying patients that have been abused by their partners. Dr. Heron has also lectured extensively on the medical response to Intimate Partner Violence, Wellness-Wellbeing, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and has co-edited two textbooks on Diversity and Inclusion in Quality Patient Care.
