Clinical Shifts
Students will be assigned eight-hour shifts at:
- Grady Memorial Hospital
- Emory University Hospital
- Emory University Hospital Midtown
Thirteen clinical shifts will be required during our month-long rotation. One Grady Emergency Medical Services (EMS) ride-along is required as well. A schedule will be provided to students on the first day of the rotation.
Bedside Teaching
All cases in the Grady Emergency Department will be co-managed with a third-year Emergency Medicine resident. All cases at each clinical site will be presented to a faculty member. In addition to reviewing the history, physical, assessment, plan bedside teaching will be provided. When other interesting cases are present in the emergency department, the faculty involved will make sure students are aware of the case in order to benefit from the educational experience.
Included in bedside education are both observation and hands-on experience in emergency department procedural skills. A tracking system has been developed to assure that students meet the objectives of the rotation. This includes seeing a wide variety of patient complaints and either observing or directly participating in procedures.
