Juneteenth Program

The School of Medicine's Juneteenth program includes a film screening and discussion and is open to all faculty, staff, and learners.

Juneteenth (short for June Nineteenth) honors the end of slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday. While we celebrate Juneteenth each year, slavery did not officially end until December 1865 when the Thirteenth Amendment was ratified. On June 17, 2021, Juneteenth became a federal holiday. This article provides more information on Juneteenth.

As part of the history domain included in the Office of Equity and Inclusion’s strategic plan, this event provides an opportunity for the School of Medicine, Woodruff Health Sciences Center, and Grady Health System colleagues to engage in discussion on the historic struggle to secure equal and adequate access to healthcare for all Americans.

2021 Program Giving Voice: The Rest of His Story with Dr. Marion Hood

In 1959, Dr. Marion G. Hood applied to Emory School of Medicine but was denied consideration for admission due to his race during a painful time of segregation in this country. Despite this obstacle, Dr. Hood went on to have a long and distinguished career in the field of gynecology and obstetrics. During this celebration, Emory School of Medicine formally apologized to Dr. Hood and invited him to share the rest of his story.

2022 Program Power to Heal Documentary

Power to Heal tells a poignant chapter in the historic struggle to secure equal and adequate access to healthcare for all Americans. Central to the story is the tale of how a new national program, Medicare, was used to mount a dramatic, coordinated effort that desegregated thousands of hospitals across the country practically overnight. Emory Library access is needed to view.
