Welcome from the Director

Welcome to the Emory MD/PhD Website! I am excited that you have demonstrated an interest in our program and encourage you to learn about more about our program through exploring this site.

At Emory, we are dedicated to training the next generation of exceptional physician-scientists that will be leaders in the transformation of academic medicine and biomedical research. The Emory MD/PhD Program combines the advantages of rigorous preparation in clinical medicine with opportunities in interdisciplinary graduate research across an outstanding array of disciplines spanning the Laney School of Graduate Studies and the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University, Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech, the U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC) and several others that reside in Atlanta, Georgia. Besides being an academic center of excellence with a thriving tech industry, Atlanta is a multi-cultural city that offers top-notch restaurants, a vibrant nightlife, multiple professional sports teams, and an abundance of attractions and activities that make Atlanta the center for entertainment in the South. With all these incredible amenities, Money magazine has listed it as one of the top places to live in the U.S. in 2024.

The Emory University School of Medicine has been training physician-scientists since 1957 and has held continuous NIH support in the form of a Medical Scientist Training Program institutional training (MSTP) grant since 1987.  Responding to the world’s ever-changing needs, the program has grown over time, and continues to expand through the recruitment of outstanding individuals that come from diverse backgrounds and successfully move on to world-renown residency and postdoctoral programs to continue with their training as physician-scientists.  We currently have over 400 world-class training faculty that foster a highly collegial and fertile training environment and who embrace the training of physician-scientists in basic science, translational medicine, public health and engineering related matters through diverse approaches.

The Emory MD/PhD program offers a nurturing training environment, with bright, enthusiastic, and engaging students, and outstanding faculty that span many disciplines and are dedicated to the successful development of this next generation of physician-scientists. I know this program, and everything it has to offer will enable you to find and cultivate your passion towards becoming a future leader in research and clinical care. Thank you for your interest, and please feel free to contact us any time.

Sincerely,
Jason T. Yustein, MD, PhD
