Overview
Dr. Zhiyong Lin received his Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences from Old Dominion University/Eastern Virginia Medical School in 2002. He then completed his postdoctoral training in cardiovascular biology with Dr. Mukesh Jain at Brigham and Womens Hospital/Harvard Medical School. In 2006, Dr. Lin accepted a faculty position within the Cardiovascular Research Institute at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. In 2010, under the auspices of both an American Heart Association Scientist Development Grant and an NIH K99/R00 award, Dr. Lin established his independent research laboratory. Dr. Lin joined the Division of Cardiology at Emory University as an Associate Professor in 2017.
The main focus of the Lin lab centers around the molecular mechanisms that govern vascular and hepatic function. Specifically, our work focuses on the regulatory roles of a matricellular family of proteins termed CCN (Cyr61, CTGF and Nov) in vascular biology. How do the expression patterns and matricellular interactions of CCNs (specifically CCN3) lead to biological consequences associated with vascular diseases such as atherosclerosis, restenosis, and aortic aneurysms and dissections? Ongoing efforts in the lab aim to gain in-depth insights into CCN function and how they influence cellular and organismal homeostasis.
Recently, we have expanded our efforts to investigate the role of protein phosphatases in vascular biology. We will leverage both pharmacologic and genetic approaches to dissect the molecular basis and functional consequences of protein phosphatases on vascular disease such as aortic aneurysm, with the overall goal of disease treatment through phosphatase manipulation. Another key area of interest centers on the regulation of alcohol metabolism in the liver as well as the regulation of hepatic function by CCN proteins.
