Overview
Dr. Yuko Nakajima serves as Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and holds the position of Medical Director for Metro Atlanta Ambulance Service. A board-certified specialist in both Emergency Medicine and EMS (Emergency Medical Services), she also currently leads Mdecins Sans Frontires (Doctors Without Borders) Japan as its President.
Licensed to practice medicine in both the US and Japan, Dr. Nakajima began her career as an anesthesiologist in Japan. She then returned to the US to complete an Emergency Medicine Residency at Yale University. After finishing an EMS/Disaster Medicine fellowship at UC San Diego, she joined the faculty at Emory University in 2017.
In her capacity as President of Mdecins Sans Frontires Japan, she engages in a range of activities, including medical humanitarian efforts, advocacy, and media outreach. Dr. Nakajima has undertaken field assignments in regions including Gaza, Iraq, Syria (on two occasions), Yemen, Pakistan, South Sudan, and Nigeria. Currently, her work focuses on prehospital and emergency medicine activities that bridge her efforts between the US and Japan. Dr. Nakajima regularly travels internationally to engage in fieldwork, participate in panel discussions, deliver lectures, contribute to media engagements, teach, and take part in governance platforms for Mdecins Sans Frontires (MSF)
