Yelena Burklin
Overview
Yelena Burklin, MD, MA, Associate Professor of Medicine, Site Assistant Director for Medical Education at Emory University Hospital Midtown, Emory Division of Hospital Medicine, Emory University School of Medicine, Atlanta, GA.
Dr. Burklin received her MD from the Rostov State Medical University (Rostov-on-Don, Russia) and completed internal medicine residency training at West Virginia University. She has been an academic hospitalist at Emory University Hospital Midtown in Atlanta, GA, for over ten years. She is involved in clinical, academic, and educational activities within the Emory Division of Hospital Medicine. Dr. Burklin also co-chairs the Emory University Hospital Midtown Ethics Committee and serves as a Site Assistant Director of the Physician Assistant Student Didactic Experiential Learning Program.
As an alumna of the Society Hospital Medicine Academic Hospitalist Academy in 2017 and an alumna of Emory Woodruff Health Educators Academy Teaching Fellowship in 2019, Dr. Burklin participates in facilitating lunch and learn educational sessions, case-based faculty presentations, directing the Medical Education Journal Club 2017-2022, mini-core curriculum lecture series in hospital medicine 2017-2019, group mentoring sessions for junior faculty, and facilitating several workshops on teaching clinical reasoning.
Dr. Burklin provides supportive ethics consultations within the institution. Her specific topics of interest include promoting medical education in hospital medicine, enhancing clinical reasoning, managing emotionally challenging patient encounters, and utilizing tools required for successful doctor-patient communication.
Dr. Burklin is a member of the Society of Hospital Medicine Educational Committee, and she has been involved in the Society Hospital Medicine SPARK ONE initiative as a board question writer and peer reviewer for the hospital medicine boards.
She is particularly drawn to airline medicine and the role of clinicians aboard the aircraft.
In addition, Dr. Burklin is board-certified in Obesity Medicine and holds a Master of Arts in Bioethics from Emory University Laney Graduate School, focusing her efforts on the ethics of obesity and presenting Grand Rounds on the topic of interest.
