Overview
We are interested in understanding how epigenetic information is encoded in chromatin, how this information is transmitted, and how it can be altered by the environment to produce epiphenotypes that result in disease states. In particular, the lab studies mechanisms by which the three-dimensional organization of the genome is established and maintained in the nucleus, and whether this organization encodes epigenetic information. To approach these issues, we are studying the role of endocrine disrupting chemicals in obesity, and the mechanisms by which obesity epiphenotypes are transmitted between generations. We find that exposure of pregnant females to endocrine disrupting chemicals results in obesity in subsequent generations, and the inheritance of obesity correlates with the transmission of new binding sites for the architectural protein CTCF and several nuclear hormone receptors.
