Profile

Timothy Buchman PhD/MD

  • Department of Surgery
    Professor
  • tbuchma@emory.edu
Head shot of Timothy Buchman

Overview

During his 2009-2018 service as the founding director of the Emory Critical Care Center, Dr. Buchman integrated ICUs throughout the Emory Healthcare system and brought together clinicians and investigators from diverse disciplines to conduct research to define best clinical practices and inform public health policy.

Dr. Buchman's research spans the bench-to-bedside and encompasses studies of physiological dynamics, predictive biology, patient monitoring, the genetics of sepsis, and ICU end-of-life care.

In 2014, Dr. Buchman was the founding medical director of the Emory Electronic ICU. Funded by a $10.7 million Health Care Innovation Award from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the Emory eICU program was designed as a collaborative network supporting critical care units at Emory University Hospital, Emory University Hospital Midtown, Emory Saint Joseph's Hospital, Emory Johns Creek Hospital, and East Georgia Regional Medical Center in Statesboro, Georgia. Health care workers monitored the five hospitals from a control room outfitted with equipment at Emory Saint Joseph's Hospital, providing continuous, 24/7 monitoring of critical care patients and access to intensivist physicians and other support staff on night and weekend shifts. In 2017, a CMS report on the program determined the eICU program reduced length of patient stays in the ICU, resulted in fewer admissions, lowered costs by millions of dollars, and helped solve the shortage of critical care intensivists. In 2018, Emory and Dr. Buchman expanded the program to Royal Perth Hospital in Australia.
