Head shot of Samuel Fernandez Carriba

Overview

Samuel Fernandez-Carriba, Ph.D., is Senior Psychologist at the Marcus Autism Center, Childrens Healthcare of Atlanta, and Assistant Professor at the Emory School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics. He obtained his PhD in Clinical and Health Psychology from Universidad Autnoma de Madrid, Spain. Two years of his doctoral training took place at the Emory National Primate Research Center National Research Primate Center (Emory), where he approached the study of human emotions through an examination of biological determinants and evolutionary history as observed in the chimpanzee. After his return to Emory, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Emory Autism Center (Emory School of Medicine Department of Psychiatry). At the Marcus Center, he conducts diagnostic evaluations on children and teenagers with ASD and related disorders, as well as research on two related topics: (1) social disparities in ASD and cultural competence in healthcare providers, and (2) the impact of caregivers and professionals' well-being on intervention outcomes for children with ASD. He obtained his CBCT (Cognitively Based Compassion Training) Instructor Certificate, level 1, at Emory University in 2013, and level 2 in 2018.

Academic Appointment

  • Assistant Professor, Department of Pediatrics, Emory University School of Medicine

Education

Degrees

  • PhD from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid
  • BA from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid
  • M.S from Universidad Autónoma de Madrid

Research

Focus

  • My range of interests goes from evolutionary origins and underlying biological mechanisms of emotions, to their function and development in typical human beings and those with mental disorders. Professionally, I would like to apply my skills to the service of a multi-cultural community where I can help others to implement behaviors that will ultimately lead to healthy and adaptive life styles, while having the opportunity to study further the bases for affective dysregulation in clinical disorders such as autism.
