Rein Saral MD
Overview
Rein Saral, MD is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology at Emory University. Dr. Saral arrived at Emory in 1991 to lead the bone marrow transplantation program.
Dr. Saral's major accomplishments include being the first physician to use bone marrow transplantation in the treatment of AIDS-related malignancies and among the first to use it in the treatment of sickle cell anemia and other inherited blood disorders; and being the first to demonstrate effectiveness of a safe antiviral (acyclovir) therapy against herpesviruses in transplant patients. Dr. Saral headed the National Institutes of Health Bone Marrow Transplant Study Section to determine appropriate use of bone marrow transplantation in the treatment of human disease.
