Overview

Robert Caskey is a general surgeon at Emory University within the Division of General and Gastrointestinal Surgery. Dr. Caskey completed his medical degree at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine, graduating cum laude in 2008. He then undertook general surgery residency training at both the University of Mississippi Medical Center and the University of Pennsylvania. His residency included three research years with a specific focus on wound healing. Following his residency training, Dr. Caskey completed a two-year fellowship in Surgical Education and Simulation also at the University of Pennsylvania. He then continued in his commitment to resident education in his subsequent positions as a general surgeon at the VA Medical Center in Philadelphia and as a Clinical Associate in the Department of Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. In addition to having the distinct privilege of caring for our nations veterans, he was an active member of the Division of Surgical Education and served as a lead advisor to the Penn-Vietnam Alliance which successfully established a new ACGME International surgical residency program in Hanoi, Vietnam. Prior to joining Emory, Dr. Caskey was in private practice in Georgia with a focus on robotic and abdominal wall surgery.

Based at Emory University Hospital, Dr. Caskeys clinical practice is primarily focused on emergency general surgery, robotic surgery, and complex abdominal wall reconstruction and hernia repair, including redo/recurrent hernia repair. He also has extensive experience with peritoneal dialysis catheter placement and management and groin pain following inguinal hernia repair.

His broad research interests include wound healing, hernia recurrence, robotic surgery utilization in emergency general surgery, resident education, and simulation-based crisis resource management training for perioperative and intraoperative emergencies. He currently serves on the membership committee for, and is an active member of, the American Hernia Society.
