Patrick Sullivan MD
Overview
Dr. Sullivan in the chief quality officer for the Emory Division of Colorectal Surgery. He received his MD degree from Loyola Chicago School of Medicine, completed his general surgery residency at Emory University, and completed his colorectal fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. After completing his fellowship, Dr. Sullivan joined the faculty of Emory's Division of Colorectal Surgery and the Winship Cancer Institute in 2011.
He specializes in diseases of the colon and rectum, with expertise in the surgical management of primary and recurrent malignancy of the colon and rectum, inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease), diverticular disease, and anorectal disorders. He has a particular interest in the application of minimally invasive techniques including the use of laparoscopic and robotic approaches to treat diseases of the colon and rectum. His expertise as a robotic surgeon allows patients the benefit of smaller incisions and faster recovery.
As the chief quality officer for the division, Dr. Sullivans goal is to ensure each patient has the best evidence-based care to ensure the best outcomes. Dr. Sullivan works in close collaboration with gastrointestinal specialists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, urologists, and interventional radiologists to develop individualized and multidisciplinary management strategies for each patient. He has been recognized by both the Atlanta Magazine as well as Castle Connolly as Atlantas Top Docs.
Dr. Sullivans research efforts are focused on translational and clinical investigations involving improving patient value through evidence-based best practice protocols and improving the quality and outcomes for patients with colorectal disease. His efforts have been optimizing perioperative outcomes of patients undergoing colon and rectal surgical procedures. He serves as the director of the Winship Cancer Rectal Cancer Program and multidisciplinary team.

- My clinical research includes tailoring individualized cancer treatment based on patients tumor characteristics. I have been trained in minimally invasive techniques including laparoscopic, robotic, and transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM) partial colon resections as part of a multidisciplinary approach to colon cancer treatment.
