Phyllis Kozarsky MD
Overview
Dr. Kozarsky is a dedicated clinician, researcher and educator. She has been on faculty at Emory in the Division of Infectious diseases for over 30 years and has practiced at the Atlanta Veterans Administration Hospital, Grady Memorial Hospital, Emory University Hospital, and Emory University Hospital Midtown.
Dr. Kozarsky is certified in Internal Medicine (1982), completed her Infectious Diseases fellowship in 1984, and was later certified in Tropical Medicine (1997) and Travel Medicine (2003).
Beyond Dr. Kozarsky's clinical commitment at Emory she also has also been active in the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, and the International Society of Travel Medicine (ISTM), where she was one of the founders of the Society. .In the ISTM she served as Secretary/Treasurer, Chair of the Professional Education Committee, as Chair of the ISTM Examination Committee, and most recently as Chair of the Continuous Professional Development Committee. She also has been active as a key person in the development of an international standard of care and a Body of Knowledge for the practice of travel medicine. This led initially to the development of a Certificate of Knowledge Examination that was first given in 2003.
Dr. Kozarsky has also served as a project director for GeoSentinel, a global network of tropical/travel medicine clinics that monitors the trends in travel related illness and emerging diseases in travelers, immigrants and refugees. In her role she, helped build a network of > 65 clinics worldwide and helped to orchestrate global surveillance. The network has already contributed significantly to the knowledge and literature regarding transmission of illness in mobile populations.
Dr. Kozarsky has taught infectious diseases and clinical tropical and travel medicine at Emory for >30 years, has mentored many in their studies at every level, and continues to work with the infectious diseases division.

Research
Focus
- Current research efforts have primarily focused on issues in clinical tropical medicine and travelers health, and include: the epidemiology of travel related infections as it relates to the >150,000 patients in our GeoSentinel worldwide database as well as a growing number of patients in the pre-travel EpiTravNet database. There are many short-term studies performed by those in training, particularly at CDC, as viewed in the abstracts presented at various national and international conferences
