Research

Focus

  • Inflammatory Joint Diseases

Fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLS) are cells lining the joint capsule. They play a critical role in the pathogenesis of several autoimmune inflammatory joint diseases (IJD) including rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriatic arthritis and juvenile idiopathic arthritis. FLS retain their pathological properties even after removing them from the inflammatory environment of the arthritic joints, and can initiate joint degeneration when transplanted into a healthy joint. It is suggested that the reprogramming of the FLS chromatin landscape governs their persistently pathological properties and contributes to our current inability to attain sustained remission at the clinical and molecular levels. Hence, the key for achieving relapse-free cure to IJDs likely lies within the FLS. The research focus of our laboratory is to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying the pathological features of FLS and to develop FLS-targeted therapeutic strategies for the effective treatment of inflammation in arthritic diseases.
