Neil Winawer MD
Overview
Dr. Winawer graduated from Union College with a B.S. in Chemistry/Mathematics. He attended medical school at the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn, graduating in 1993. He performed his residency training in internal medicine at New York University/Bellevue Hospital. Dr. Winawer has been on the faculty at Emory since 1996. He was an inaugural member of the 1998 Hospitalist Group at Grady, which was the first public hospitalist program in the nation. He is currently the acting director.
Dr. Winawers area of clinical interest includes medical errors and patient safety. Aside from publishing several articles in this area Dr. Winawer also supervises monthly conferences whereby medical errors and patient safety topics are discussed. He also has studied the effects of telemetry monitoring on Emergency Room flow, presenting his results at the Society of Hospital Medicines annual meeting.
Dr. Winawer spends five month a year as a supervising attending on the medical wards of Grady Memorial Hospital. He also supervises medical residents several times per week in the Medical Clinic at Grady. During the other months Dr. Winawer continues to teach in the outpatient setting and serves as the Director of the Telemetry Unit. His day to day management includes downgrading low risk patients to expedite emergency room flow of telemetry patients.
Dr. Winawer oversees the lecture schedule for the Hospitalist Group and runs the Morbidity & Mortality Case Conferences. He also organizes the interdepartmental Internal Medicine/Emergency Medicine Conferences.

Focus
- My academic interests include venous thromboembolism, allergic reactions and the study of medical errors. At the institutional level I have supervised the monthly Morbidity and Mortality Case Conferences since 1998 and have lectured regionally, nationally and internationally on these topics
