Overview
Dr. Negar Fani is a clinical neuropsychologist and Associate Professor at Emory University in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. She is also an affiliate faculty member for the Emory University Neuroscience Graduate Program. Her program of research is detailed here:
https://www.negarfani.com/
She uses a variety of tools to examine brain-behavior relationships in trauma-exposed individuals, including individuals who have experienced racial trauma, and develop novel, accessible interventions for trauma-related problems. Her laboratory employs affective cognitive paradigms, neuropsychological testing, psychophysiology, functional MRI and diffusion tensor imaging.
Attentional processes are at the core of Dr. Fani's research program. She explores how social-emotional stimuli affect attention in trauma-exposed populations, and how attentional disruptions may be ameliorated with the use of technology. Dr. Fani is currently testing the use of a novel device to augment mind-body interventions in dissociative trauma-exposed people. She is also testing the use of non-invasive temporal interference deep brain stimulation to address problems with attention and emotion regulation in various populations.
Dr. Fani's laboratory is also developing community partnerships to: 1) disseminate science to the community and 2) collaboratively facilitate community resilience to psychosocial stressors, including race-related stressors.
The following are active projects in Dr. Fani's lab:
1) Neural mechanisms of device-augmented breath focused mindfulness in dissociative trauma-exposed people; MIND study (https://www.negarfani.com/mind-study)
2) Neural and behavior profiles associated with racial discrimination
3) Modulating attention and emotion regulation with temporal interference: non-invasive deep brain stimulation
Dr. Fani's laboratory is currently accepting applications for research assistants. Assistants must agree to a minimum two-semester commitment, and can complete an application at negarfani.com.
