Overview
After completing her surgical oncology fellowship at Emory University in 2005, Dr. Rizzo joined the Emory Division of Surgical Oncology. Her clinical specialties include treatment of breast cancer, melanoma, advanced skin cancers, and soft tissue sarcoma. Dr. Rizzo initiated a soft tissue surgical oncology practice at Emory Saint Joseph's Hospital in 2013.
Dr. Rizzo is the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer Liaison Physician at Emory University Hospital Midtown (EUHM) and Emory University Hospital (EUH), and is actively involved in quality measures and initiatives to assure excellence in cancer care at both hospitals. She led the EUHM Breast Center's application process for accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC) in 2010 and 2013. She also chairs the hospital's weekly Breast Multidisciplinary Tumor Board.
In 2015, Dr. Rizzo was involved with the initiation of targeted Intraoperative Radiation Therapy (IORT) at EUHM, which was one of only three centers in Georgia to provide the new breast cancer procedure at that time. Targeted IORT is an individualized radiation treatment that delivers low-energy X-rays directly into the breast tumor cavity immediately following such breast-conserving surgeries as lumpectomy or partial mastectomy.
