Michael Halkos MD
Overview
Dr. Halkos is Chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Emory University School of Medicine and oversees 31 faculty members at 7 different Emory-owned or affiliated hospitals. He is a Professor of Surgery and an academic cardiac surgeon-scientist with expertise in minimally invasive cardiac surgery, specifically in robotic mitral valve surgery and robotic-assisted coronary artery bypass surgery, hybrid coronary revascularization, and hybrid atrial fibrillation ablation. At Emory, Dr. Halkos and Douglas Murphy, MD, helm one of the largest and most successful robotic cardiac surgical programs in the world. He is also one of the highest volume surgeons performing robotic valve and coronary procedures and an international leader in these procedures. Dr. Halkos directs the Cardiothoracic Center for Clinical Research, which has served as the national and international PI site for several FDA investigational device exemption trials and has enrolled patients into numerous multicenter clinical trials in cardiac and thoracic surgery. He was the Department of Surgery's first faculty member to receive an NHLBI K-23 Award, and currently serves as principal investigator for multiple industry- and NIH-sponsored trials. In 2018, he was inducted into the Emory MilliPub Club, which recognizes Emory faculty who have published one or more individual papers that have each garnered more than 1,000 citations.
Academic Appointment
- Professor of Surgery, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Department of Surgery, Emory University School of Medicine
- Chief, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Department of Surgery, Emory University School of Medicine
- Scientific Director, Cardiothoracic Surgery Center for Clinical Research, Department of Surgery, Emory University School of Medicine
Education

Research
Focus
- Current research focuses on improving outcomes after cardiac surgery. Specifically, I have received NHLBI funding via a K23 grant to evaluate operative strategies to reduce the incidence of postoperative stroke after coronary artery bypass surgery. Other funded projects include evaluating hybrid coronary revascularization for patients with multivessel coronary disease.
