Maura George MD
Overview
Dr. Maura George was born and raised in Erie, Pennsylvania, completed an undergraduate degree at Princeton University, and received her MD from Northwestern University. She left Chicago for sunny Atlanta to complete her residency in Internal Medicine and joined the Division of General Internal Medicine at Grady after graduation. In her faculty position in Internal Medicine she finds satisfaction in addressing both the medical and social reasons for her patients' health concerns and teaching medical students and residents to do the same. She teaches across levels, serving as a faculty advisor to undergraduate groups, a Small Group Advisor to medical students in the Crumpler Society, and a core faculty member for the Internal Medicine Residency Program. Involved in ethics locally and nationally, she serves as the Medical Director of Ethics at Grady.
Maura helped found and currently serves as director of the Community Learning and Social Medicine (CLSM) course, a required 18-month course in which medical students engage with community partners throughout the metro Atlanta area and learn health equity and advocacy topics through workshops and lectures. She founded the Social Medicine Distinction for internal medicine residents and continues to serve as the distinction director and as a core faculty member for the residency program. She founded and currently advises for the Health Equity, Advocacy, and Policy (HEAP) track under the graduate medical education umbrella. Since 2010 she Maura has run a popular Social Medicine elective for students and trainees.
Outside of work, Maura enjoys spending time with her husband Dr. Andy Simpson, a gastroenterologist at Emory Decatur Hospital, and her three awesome boys.
