Matthew Clifton MD
Overview
Dr. Clifton completed his general surgery training at the University of California, San Francisco, where he also did two years of basic science and clinical research in the Fetal Treatment Center, and completed his pediatric surgery fellowship at Emory. He has interests in surgical oncology, complex hepatobiliary surgery, clinical outcomes research, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation he served as surgical director of ECMO at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta from 2011-2019.
Dr. Clifton is currently co-PI of a study evaluating the accuracy of MRI guided laparoscopic pull-through for imperforate anus, and the surgeon of record for an investigation of the infusion of liver cell suspension in children with urea cycle disorders. Dr. Clifton is the institutional surgical representative at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta for the Childhood Liver Disease and Research Education Network (ChiLDREN), which studies biliary atresia as well as a host of other childhood liver pathologies, and is the North American representative of the International Pediatric Endosurgery Group.

Research
Focus
- I have a primarily clinical and translational research focus, centered on ideas that can be put to use in a relatively short time to improve the surgical care of children. Collaboration with Georgia Tech engineers has resulted in a provisional patent. I have submitted an institutional grant to study outcomes of MRI guided Endorectal pull-throughs for imperforate anus. My recently completed surgical quality project proved that chest radiograph following removal of foreign body was unnecessary.
