Maria Russell
Overview
Dr. Russell completed her general surgery residency at Emory University as well as a two-year research fellowship in the Emory Transplant Immunology Lab. Upon completion of her surgical oncology fellowship at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, she returned to the Emory Department of Surgery as a faculty member in 2012.
Her clinical practice focuses on complex gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary malignancies, melanoma, and sarcoma. She is also an expert in hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemoperfusion (HIPEC), which delivers highly concentrated, heated chemotherapy directly to the abdomen, allowing for higher doses of chemotherapy than systemic chemotherapy delivery.
Dr. Russell works with gastroenterologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and pathologists to develop individual treatment plans for her patients. She is an active member of the multidisciplinary tumor boards at Emory, and is the co-chair and chair of the tumor boards at Emory University Hospital at Midtown and Grady Memorial Hospital. She was appointed chair of the Georgia Society of the American College of Surgeons (GSACS) Commission on Cancer (CoC) in 2020, and has served as the CoC's Cancer Liaison Physician at Grady Memorial Hospital since 2014. In 2022, she was appointed interim chief quality officer of Winship Cancer Institute.
