Overview
Dr. Meena Prasad joined the Emory Gastroenterology faculty at the Atlanta VA Medical Center in September 2015. Dr. Prasad received her undergraduate degree in Psychology from Princeton University and then MD degree from Emory University in 2009. She completed her internship and residency in internal medicine at Emory in 2012. She joined the faculty at Emory after completing gastroenterology fellowship at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago in 2015. She has a special interest in inflammatory bowel disease and hereditary colorectal cancer.
Dr. Prasad serves as the Assistant Chief of Gastroenterology at the Atlanta VA as well as the Director of Inflammatory Bowel Disease and the GI Fellowship Site Director at the Atlanta VA. She organizes the schedules and educational activities for trainees at the VA and enjoys teaching endoscopy and training fellows in her IBD clinic. She is also the director for the VA National monthly IBD Teleconference and participates in several institutional and national committees.
Dr. Prasad's research interest lies in quality improvement (QI) with regards to IBD and colon cancer. She participated in the Emory Faculty Development Course in Quality Improvement with her mentee on a project to improve vaccination rates in IBD patients; this posted was recognized by the American College of Gastroenterology with a Presidential Poster Award. She has participated in other award winning QI projects including implementing a low residue diet with a split dose bowel prep to effectively improving bowel prep adequacy in a Veterans Affairs Endoscopy Unit (American College of Gastroenterology Outstanding Poster Presentation Award 2018) and a project to decrease unresolved positive FIT tests (Digestive Diseases Week Poster of Distinction 2018).
She also participates in clinical research. She is the VA Primary Investigator for Gene Discoveries in Subjects with Crohns Disease of African Descent (GENESIS study). Principal Investigator is Dr. Subra Kugathasan. Funded by National Institutes of Health National Institute for Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases RO1 DK087694. She is also a sub-investigator for the VA Colonoscopy Versus Fecal Immunochemical Test in Reducing Mortality from Colorectal Cancer (CONFIRM). Principal Investigator is Dr. Stephan Goebel. Multi-site trial with 40 VA Medical centers participating and over 38,000 patients recruited and followed over 10 years.

In her free time, Dr. Prasad enjoys several hobbies. She is a member of the Atlanta Lawn Tennis Association (ALTA) and plays doubles on her women's ALTA team. She is a parent volunteer at her kids' school and well-known for her homemade chocolate chip cookies. She also enjoys gardening and brings in fresh blooms for the break room at the Atlanta VA over the summer.
