Overview
Lei "Richard" Qiu, PhD, DABR, joined Emory University in July 2019 as an Assistant Professor of Medical Physics in the Department of Radiation Oncology. He earned his BS in Physics from Shandong University in 2009 and his PhD in Physics from Case Western Reserve University in 2014. He completed his Therapeutic Medical Physics Residency at the Cleveland Clinic in 2019, where he was Chief Resident. He currently serves as the Associate Director of Emory's Therapeutic Medical Physics Residency Program. Based primarily at Winship Cancer Institute's Clifton campus, his responsibilities include clinical service, research, teaching, and community engagement.
Clinical Service: Dr. Qiu leads the Eye Plaque Radiotherapy and HDR Prostate Brachytherapy services. He transitioned Eye Plaque Radiotherapy Treatment Planning in-house, enhancing efficiency and reducing costs. He also oversees quality assurance for medical linear accelerators and provides support for various radiation therapy services.
Research: Dr. Qiu's research focuses on adaptive radiation therapy, including auto-segmentation and adaptive planning using deep learning. He collaborates on projects to advance treatments for lung and prostate cancer, as well as ocular melanoma.
Teaching: Dr. Qiu teachers and mentors postdoctoral fellows, residents, and graduate students, contributing to their development and success in the field.
Community engagement: Dr. Qiu actively serves on Campus Life Committee and Honorary Degrees Committee within the Emory University Senate. He also participates in various committees within national professional organizations, including the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) and the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE), promoting leadership and mentorship.
