Head shot of James Bailey

Overview

Dr. James L. Bailey attended medical school at Jefferson Medical College and then trained in internal medicine at the Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh. Following completion of a fellowship in nephrology at Emory, he joined the Emory faculty in 1991 as an assistant professor of medicine. Since then, he has been involved in a variety of research and clinical activities with a special focus on chronic kidney disease. His basic science interest is looking at mechanisms of muscle wasting under conditions of chronic kidney disease. This includes studying insulin resistance that occurs commonly with chronic kidney disease. In the clinical arena, Dr. Bailey has been involved in studies that have aimed at improving conditions for patients on chronic dialysis. This has included studying dosing of erythropoeitin in patients on chronic hemodialyis, looking at delivery of optimal dialysis dose for patients on hemodialysis and looking at disorders of sleep for patients on chronid dialysis.

As the director of Emory University Hospital's dialysis unit, Dr. Bailley is heavily involved in the delivery of various renal replacement therapies in the acute setting including hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and continuous renal replacement therapies (CRRT). He also attends on the renal services at Emory University Hospital, Grady Memorial Hospital and the V.A. Teaching Hospital. As a nephrology consultant, he sees patients at the Emory Clinic for a variety of renal related problems, including blood pressure control, diabetic nephropathy, glomerulonephritis and chronic kidney disease. He also sees patients on both chronic hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis with a special interest in home dialysis modalities.

Academic Appointment

  • Master Clinician, Emory University School of Medicine
  • Professor of Medicine, Medicine - Renal Medicine, Emory University School of Medicine

Education

Degrees

  • BS from St. Francis College
  • MS from North Carolina State University

Research

Focus

  • Basic research is focused on elucidating mechanisms of muscle wasting in renal disease and diabetes. The latter is interesting because recent studies would suggest that there is a corollary between diabetes and senescence. Specifically, processes that are at work in diabetes may also accelerate the aging process. Given the expertise that is available in our department, this should prove to be ground for further research.
