Overview
Dr. Lewis joined the Emory University School of Medicine faculty in 2017 after thirteen years of practice in community emergency medicine. John received his medical doctorate from Howard University in 1999. In 2003, he completed his Emergency Medicine (EM) residency at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, IL. He currently serves as Emory's Social Emergency Medicine (SEM) subsection co-chair. From 2021 to 2023, John co-chaired the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) SEM Education Workgroup. This work led to the creation of the first national open-access social emergency medicine curriculum, SEMinal Study.
Dr. Lewis is passionate about teaching and has previously held academic positions at Cook County Hospital and Hampton University. He currently serves as the director of the Advanced Practice Provider Education and the SEM clinical rotation within the Department of Emergency Medicine. He has received numerous teaching awards, including the EM Teacher of the Year Award at Emory University Hospital Midtown (2018, 2019, 2021, and 2023). John has spent much of his professional life educating and creating solutions addressing health inequities, poverty alleviation, and social justice. He is often recruited to lecture on topics of health disparities and social drivers (determinants) of health by preeminent universities, Fortune 500s, radio/TV outlets, and community groups.
For more than twenty years, Dr. Lewis has conducted clinical work in international mission fields and rural, urban, and suburban practices. He is currently creating novel educational and practice-based programs that address health inequities through history, the arts, and science. Examples of these projects and collaborative works can be found in his podcasts, social media channels, and live community events.
